Obituary for Lewis Carroll Guthrie
Lewis Carroll Guthrie, 85 of Stuart, passed away peacefully at his home with his wife by his side on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. A visitation will be held, Monday, February 24, at 10:00 AM at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart prior to an 11:00 AM Funeral service. Burial will be at Morrisburg Cemetery following the service, with a luncheon upon return at the Methodist Church in Stuart. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Lewis Guthrie Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

Lewis was born on April 19, 1934 to Lloyd and Ailenne (Myers) Guthrie in Des Moines, Iowa. His family relocated to various states including Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri during his childhood, returning to Menlo in 1950. He graduated from Menlo High School with the class of 1952. On June 27, 1954 he united in marriage to Lois Boots, and to this union two daughters were born, Peggy and Jo.

After working as a farmhand and truck driver in his youth, Lewis was employed at Red’s Cash Lumber/Community Lumber in Stuart for over 50 years as a skilled carpenter. He served his community as a member of the Stuart Fire Department for 42 years and served on the Stuart Utility Board. Over his lifetime he had many hobbies that included fishing, canoeing, hunting, traveling and golf. His family, grandkids and great grandkids filled his life with joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Ailenne; and brother, Carl.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Lois of Stuart; daughters, Peggy (Larry) Garrett of Martinez Lake, AZ and Jo (Jason) Veatch of Altoona; grandchildren: Chad (Jill) McDowell and their children, Aspen and Braylon of Norwalk, Scott (Brandy) McDowell and their children, Noah, Keaton and Kiptyn of West Des Moines, Ashley (Kendall) Bowman and their children, Kenzley and Koen Lewis of West Des Moines, Jordan Veatch of Waukee, Jake Veatch of Ames, Brett (Carla) Garrett and their children, Madison and Wyatt of Oceanside, CA, Jesse (Aidan) Garrett of Ft. Wayne, IN; siblings, Opal Rice of Guthrie Center and Lawrence Guthrie of Guthrie Center and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
