Obituary for Goldie Colleen Miller
Goldie Colleen Miller was born on November 20, 1927 to Harmon Earl Miller and Rena Eldora Miller (Bacon) on the family farm, rural Menlo, Iowa. She departed this life to be with her Lord on May 21, 2020, at the New Homestead Care Center, Guthrie, Center, Iowa. Open visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory – Stuart Chapel. Graveside services will be held 11:00 am Thursday, May 28 in Morrisburg Cemetery rural Stuart. Memorial contributions may be made in Goldie’s name to Panora Pets and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. She received the Lord at Charles E. Fuller Tent Meeting on the State of Iowa Capitol Grounds and served Him at the Glendon Union Sunday School as Secretary and Sunday School Teacher for many years.
Goldie was a farm girl at heart and helped with all farm chores every day. She loved all farm animals including dogs and cats (Cookie, Boxer and others). She loved to drive through the country side in the spring and spot the first baby calf of the season laying in someone’s pasture.
Goldie attended Pleasant Valley Schools through the eighth grade and graduated from Panora High School with the class of ’46. After graduation, Goldie worked in Panora for a few years mostly at Lloyd and Georgia Hoerner’s Bakery. She then went to Des Moines and took a business course. Upon completion she went to work for the Iowa Conservation Commission (DNR) as a clerk. She retired after 36 years as a Payroll Accountant and went back to the farm to take care of her elderly mother.
She loved family get-togethers and reunions at home or at Margaret’s house or Doris’s house in the park, and buying Christmas gifts for the young children. Her hobbies were collecting old pens and pencils, good looking recipes, coins, and reading newspapers from cover to cover. She was a good cook and could make delicious pies and other foods. Goldie liked to fish in the local rivers and ponds and one week made a fishing trip to Canada. She also liked to watch spectator sports on TV and made several bus trips to Chicago to watch the Chicago Cubs (one trip by train with her parents and sister, Norma).
She took another train tour to the Seattle World’s Fair. There she went to the top of the Space Needle and lived on an anchored ship because there were no hotel rooms available, and she enjoyed many other interesting exhibits while she was there. The train tour then went down the coast with stops in Portland, Oregon, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, last stop Las Vegas and then home.
Goldie made several plane, car or van trips to Abilene or Kingsland, Texas, with other family members to visit her brother, Dale and Family. On one of those trips, Dale drove them to Lake Jackson and the Gulf of Mexico. On the way home their plane from Houston flew over the rainbow. She enjoyed several bus trips around Iowa to take a cruise up the Mississippi River; Minnesota to the Mall of American and Iron Mines; Missouri to Branson; and to Wisconsin to see the Dells. She also made a trip to the West Coast in a ’49 Ford with her brother, Harold and sisters. Comfort – none; trouble – none; good times – yes.
She belonged to a weekly Bible Study group; After Five (a Christian Women’s Club); Glendale Club; and Sunshine Club.
In her retirement years she became co-owner manager of the farm she loved, naming it Rock ‘N River Farms and spent many years remodeling the house and barn. During this time she suffered complete hearing loss and went to the University of Iowa Hospital for a Cochlear ear implant.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harmon and Rena Miller; siblings: James Dale Miller Sr. and wife, Gennetta, Harold E. Miller and wife, Ethel, Margaret McCurdy and Doris Stokke and husband, Sam; nephew, Bernard Miller and nephew, Lynn McCurdy. Goldie leaves behind her sister, Norma Miller of Menlo; brother-in-law, Wilson McCurdy of Guthrie Center; nieces and nephews: James Dale Miller Jr. (Linda) of Dallas, TX, Christine Lana of Abilene, TX, Janece Perry (Lew) of Tacoma, WA, Dianna Miller of Oregon, Donald McCurdy (Kathy) of Dundee, Darwin McCurdy (Deb) of Linden, Ann Lupkes (Brian) of Lattimer, Douglas Stokke (Jodie) of Story City, Delayne Stokke (Chris) of Ames, Kymm Stokke of Ames and a host of great and great-great nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that will miss her dearly.
