Obituary for Steven Michael Nopoulos
Steven Michael Nopoulos, 75, of Lakeland, Florida (formerly of Norfolk, Virginia) passed away peacefully on the morning of May 29, 2020. A military graveside service will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 6, 2020 in South Oak Grove Cemetery. We will live stream the service starting at 11:00 A.M. on our Facebook Page at facebook.com/johnsonfamilyfh. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stuart American Legion and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Professional arrangements Johnson Family Funeral Home & Crematory – Stuart Chapel.

He was born November 13, 1944 in Muscatine, Iowa to Leo and Iris Nopoulos who would later move their family to Stuart, Iowa where Steve graduated High School in 1963.

An accomplished athlete, he would later enlist in the United Sates Navy near the beginning of the Vietnam Conflict, being stationed with the joint Army-Navy Mobile Riverine Assault Force as a part of the River Assault Flotilla One Program supporting the 9th Infantry Division. For his service, he was awarded multiple commendations including the Navy Achievement Medal with Valor for his actions during Operation Coronado in addition to being awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded during operations in the Mekong Delta on 29 July 1967.

He later married Mary Ellen Hanner on December 30, 1967 and permanently relocated to Norfolk, Virginia. Shortly after retirement, Steven relocated to Lakeland, Florida where he became an influential individual in the retirement community. Constantly checking on the well-being of those around him, serving on the community board and spending many evenings with friends around the card table. Always looking for a deal, Steve never met a flea market he did not like, a stranger he did not know and was known for being able to squeeze 2 cents from one penny.

Steven was proceeded in death by his wife Mary Ellen Hanner Nopoulos whose shared headstone says, "My Love, My Life, My Heart, Wait For Me". The wait is finally over for their reunion.

He is also preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Iris Nopoulos and his brother Jon Nopoulos and is survived by his brothers, Craig (Kay) McCarthy of Warsaw, Missouri and Tony (Peggy) Nopoulos of North Liberty, Iowa and Sister-in-Law Rita Nopoulos Carpenter of Rockbridge, Missouri in addition to a wealth of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and close special and caring friends.
