Obituary for Martha Hill
Martha (Ulrich) Hill was born on August 24, 1922, to Fred and Lottie Ulrich in Adel, IA. They moved to Redfield, IA when she was still a young child. Martha had a great love of music and played the piano. She started playing the piano and organ for the Redfield United Methodist Church when she was only 9 years old, and she did so for the next 87 years. She graduated from Redfield High School in 1939 and began working in an office in Adel for several years after graduation. In September of 1943, she married A.J. (Jack) Hill. After his time in the Navy and their early married life in California, they returned to Redfield. To their family three sons were born; Darrel, Fred, and Denny. Jack and Martha lived in Redfield all of their married lives and were both great members of the community. Martha was a member of many civic and religious organizations. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, and was also an active member and leader of the United Methodist Women for many years. She was a very active member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 74 years and held many offices on and off over the course of that time, heading up many events including the Veterans Day Dinners and Poppy Day, and was also a Past President member. Her last official act as a citizen of Redfield was being the Grand Marshal alongside her lifelong friend and classmate, Byrle Spillers, during Old Settlers in June of 2018. She then moved to Stuart to The Willows Assisted Living facility. She passed away peacefully at Community Care Center in Stuart on June 13, 2021 at the age of 98.
Per Martha’s wishes, there will be no services. Her cremains will be interred at a private family ceremony at East Linn Cemetery north of Redfield. The family requests that memorials be made in her name to the Redfield United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary in Redfield, and to EveryStep Hospice, 3000 Easton Blvd, Des Moines, IA 50317.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents and 8 of her 9 siblings, her husband Jack, her three sons, Darrel, Fred, and Denny and a great-grandson, Jack Hill.
