Obituary for Teresa Ann Powell
Teresa Ann Powell, 88, of Guthrie Center (formerly of Menlo) passed away Monday, September 17, 2018 at the New Homestead in Guthrie Center. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. Friday September 21, at the All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart. A Funeral Mass will follow the visitation at 11:00 A.M. at All Saints Catholic Church. Burial will immediately follow the service in the South Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart. Memorial contributions may be made to the Teresa Powell Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Teresa was born June 26, 1930 in rural Adair County, Iowa to John A. and Anna (Spain) O’Brien. She grew up in rural Menlo where she attended Country school and then later Menlo Community School. Teresa was united in marriage to Irwin E. “Short” Powell on October 3, 1946 and together they became the proud parents of five children; Doug, Karen, Gwen, Deborah and Joe. Teresa started work at a young age working as a waitress. She started at the Maid-rite in Greenfield, then The Stagestop and Harris House in Stuart. In 1986, Teresa and her husband Short helped their son Joe purchase and run Short’s Bar in Menlo and after Joe’s passing they continued operating the bar until Teresa retirement. Teresa was a lifelong member of the All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart and was part of the Altar & Rosary Society. Her biggest joy in life were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved hosting holiday dinners and always made sure to cook everyone their favorite food. She also enjoyed trips to Lake Robbins with the dancing group and enjoying a meal out with family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna O’Brien, daughters Karen Dupuy and Deborah Powell, Son Joe Powell, Grandson Brian Powell and Great-Grandson John Kunkle. Siblings Mary Cook, Wayne O’Brien, Elizabeth Waltz, Rita Bishop, Martina Breheny and Rose Cox.
Teresa leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, Doug (Janice) Powell and Gwen (Jim Oberholtz) Powell. Son-in-Law, Ron Dupuy. Grandchildren, Brent (Mandy) Powell their children, Cerria and Gunner; Wyatt Powell (son of Brian Powell); Karey (Nate) Smith their children, Brooke, Matt and Nick; Kevin (Angie) Dupuy their children Grace and Gavin; Travis (Ali) Kunkle, Travis’s sons, Kade and Kamron, and Travis and Ali’s children Karli and Kannon; Calvin (Elizabeth) Kunkle their daughter, Arya. Brother, John (Marie) O’Brien. Brother-in-Law Clarence Powell and Sister-in-Law Alice Lundy and a host of nieces, nephews and friends all of whom will miss her greatly.
