Obituary for Etta M. Chesterman
Etta Margaret Chesterman, 86, of Stuart passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Community Care Center in Stuart. Visitation will be held from 6-8 P.M. on Monday, September 8th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Funeral service will be held at 10 A.M. on Tuesday, September 9th at the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Burial will be at South Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Etta M. Etta was born December 5, 1927 to Benjamin and Edith (Clark) Jones in Adair County, Iowa. She attended elementary school at Grove #2 and graduated from Menlo High School. Following graduation she attended Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines graduating as a Register Nurse with the class of 1949. She attended graduate school at the University of Colorado-Denver and Tulane University in New Orleans. On June 19, 1963 she was united in marriage to Edwin Chesterman. To this union two sons were born: Dana Edwin and Paul Alan.
During her 48 years of working as a Registered Nurse she was employed as Director of Nursing Service at Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Associate Director of Nursing Service at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines and the last 19 years for the State of Iowa Department Inspections and Appeals Division of Health Facilities as a surveyor and supervisor.
Etta was an active member of the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church where she served on the United Methodist Women’s Society, taught Sunday School and served as the church treasurer for several years. She was a member of the Iowa Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood. She enjoyed gardening, reading and cooking. Most of all her children and grandchildren have been the joy of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Edith Jones; sister, Mary Russell and brother-in-law, Homer Russell.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her sons, Dana (Tracy) Chesterman of Redfield and Paul (Michelle) Chesterman of Sun Prairie, WI; grandchildren, Nicholas Paul Chesterman, Nathan William Chesterman, Brody Edwin Chesterman, Kylee Etta Chesterman, LeAnna Kay Stamper, Christopher Lee Carson; great-grandson, Ryan Charles Stamper; niece, Pam Blake; great-nephews, DJ Blake and Jeremy Blake and a host of other family and friends that will miss her dearly.
