Obituary for Gary Lloyd Benton
Gary Lloyd Benton, 77, of Rural Stuart, Iowa passed away peacefully on April 1, 2017 at Creston Specialty Care. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home – Stuart Chapel. Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday, April 7 at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will take place in Fairview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gary Benton Memorial Fund. Gary was born August 9, 1939 in rural Adair County, Iowa to Howard J. and Nellie M. (Gustin) Benton. He grew up in rural Adair County and attended Howe Country School and Graduated from Greenfield High School with the class of 1958. After graduating Gary farmed with his parents and worked part-time for Sinclair Gas Station and Pepsi before enlisting in the United States Army and served his country proud during the Vietnam era being honorably discharged in January 28, 1968. Gary was united in marriage to Carolyn Elizabeth Ann Thompson on July 1, 1962 in Greenfield. To this union two children were born, Connie and Eric. After their marriage they made their home south of Stuart. Gary’s life revolved around his family and farming. Farming was his passion in life, but Gary spent time working at Barrett’s Superette Locker in Rosserdale, driving truck for BJ Trucking Company, as a salesman with Archer Oil, board member of the Adair County Sanitary Landfill, and assessor for the Adair County Assessor’s Office in Greenfield. He was a past member of the Grove Chapel Methodist Church and a current member of the Fairview Congregational Church. Gary enjoyed reading, studying history, serving as a 4-H leader in Adair County, farming and spending time with his family.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Nellie Benton, brothers Robert and Larry Benton, in-laws Leland Sr and Estella Thompson, grandson Logan Wallace, brothers-in-law Gene McClelland and Jerry Thompson, sisters-in-law Joyce Purdy and Phyllis Ernst.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Carolyn of rural Stuart; children, Connie (David) Wallace of Greenfield and Eric (Shanelle) Benton of Stuart; grandchildren, Gina (Jon) Shelley and their children Corbin and Kysa, Jill Wallace, Erica (Jared) Knights and their daughter Charlee; Cheyenne (Sean) Snodgrass and their child, Emma; Evan Benton; sister-in-laws, Estella McClelland of Orient, Lois Thompson of Creston, Marlene Thompson of Phoenix, Arizona, and Beryl Benton Long of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law, Leland Thompson Jr. of Phoenix, Arizona and Dale Ernst of Des Moines and a host of other relatives and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
