Obituary for Howard E. Jones
Howard E. Jones, 92, of Earlham passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2021 surrounded by his family at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 20th at the Bear Creek Friend’s Church, rural Earlham. Visitation will begin at 11:30 A.M. until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be at the Bear Creek Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Howard’s name to the Bear Creek Friend’s Church. Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
Howard was born on April 16, 1928 to Elmer and Stella (Beals) Jones at his grandparent’s farm north of Earlham. Growing up he attended Earlham Schools and graduated with the Class of 1946. Following graduation, he began his lifelong career farming. On August 4, 1949 he was united in marriage to Delores Smith at the Motor Friend’s Church. To this union three children were born: Roger, Rosemary and Russell. The family lived briefly in New Sharon before moving to the home farmstead east of Earlham for 68 years. In addition to farming, Howard drove an Earlham School bus for a many years and continued to drive for events into his 80’s. Howard was very active at the Bear Creek Friend’s Church and participated in the Iowa Yearly Meeting. He also spent time delivering motorhomes to customers throughout the United States. In his spare time he loved: Civil War history, collecting John Deere memorabilia and belt buckles and woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Russell; and siblings: Claire Jones, Wayne Jones, Edna Lamb and Kenneth Jones.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 71 years, Delores; son, Roger (Patricia) Jones of Clive; daughter, Rosemary (William) Ralston of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren: Jason Jones, Jacquelyn Jones, Justin Jones, Stephanie (Chad) Welborn, Andrea (Steve) Cummings, David (Kriss) Ralston, Kurt Jones and Kris (Ashleigh) Jones; great-grandchildren: Cassie, Abby, Hannah, Shannon, Kate, Claire, Presley and Savannah; great-great-grandson, Garrett; and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
