Obituary for John H. Gomez
John H. Gomez, 94, died on August 5, 2014 at the Stuart Community Care Center. Services will be at the Historic All Saints Center in Stuart on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 2:00 P.M.. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, August 7th at the Historic All Saints Center. Burial will be at the Greenfield Cemetery in Greenfield, IA following services with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the John Gomez Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Johnie was born at home, in Casey, IA on February 2, 1920 to Luis and Christina Gomez. John served in the U.S. Army for 5 1/2 years including the occupation as a decorated war veteran in the European Theatre in Company “A” 23rd Armored Engineered Battalion of the 5th Armored Division. He was at the invasion of Normandy, landing on Omaha Beach. After his honorable discharge, he married Goldie L. Jacobson on Jan. 7, 1946. In 1951 he found himself in a local tavern in Stuart. By the end of the day, he was the owner. He was the owner/operator of Johnies Tavern for 62 years. He retired on August 7, 2013. John was a member of the Stuart Chamber of Commerce, and a proud business owner.
John loved spending time with his family. He acquired a collection of animated stuffed animals as gifts and proudly displayed them for the family to enjoy. He loved showing off the latest one. He also loved to give small stuffed animals to local children. John loved reading the newspaper from front to back, and visiting with loyal customers.
Survivors include: one son, Rick Gomez (Billiejo) of Dexter; four daughters, Charlene Beeson of Perry, Vickie O’Brien of Springfield, MO, Deb Elliott (Roger) of Des Moines, Audrey Gomez ( Larry Wolfe), of Stuart; one brother, Joe Gomez (Wilma) of Georgia, and two sister-in-laws, Virginia Gomez of Des Moines, and Rosa Eddy of Greenfield. Seven grandchildren; Ross (Sarah), Kim (Dusty), Kelly, Kevin (Eddie), April (Derek), Nick (Lizzie), Chris (Kristi). Seven great-grandchildren; Alexa, Ben, Dakota, Haely, Mara, Joseph, and one more on the way. One great-great-granddaughter, Jordyn.
He was preceded in death by his wife and partner in life and business, Goldie in 1987; and siblings, Clarence Templeman, Caroline Reed, Lizzie Edwards, Agnes Keese, Elais Gomez, and Carl Gomez.
