Kenneth Eldon Schmeling was born on the Schmeling family farm south of Casey, IA on June 8, 1934. He was youngest child of John F and Hattie (Raduenz) Schmeling. Kenny was baptized and confirmed in the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Casey where he was a faithful member until his death on March 26th, 2023, having attained the age of 88 years, 9 months, 18 days.
Kenny attended the first grade at Walnut #3 until his family moved to town in 1942 where he received his diploma at the Casey Independent School in town. He went on to continue his education after graduation at the Des Moines Technical School, then working for Wayne Maas, Leonard’s TV, McCoy’s TV and Hallett Construction.
In June of 1960 he married his beloved wife, Betty Lou Lemke, also of Casey at the Lutheran Church of Casey. They moved to Salina, KS where he worked for four years for the City of Salina. Their 2nd son, David Lynn, was born to the couple while in Kansas. The family then moved to Des Moines, IA in 1971 where Kenny worked for the Electric Pump and Tool Company until his retirement. In 1972 a third son was born and was named Dennis Lee. Ken moved his family back to Casey where he lived until his death on Sunday morning.
Kenny served the church as a board member, the community of Casey as a Cub Scout leader, Lions Club member, and the Casey City Council for 24 years. Kenny was known for his large collection of Native American memorabilia and even created his own beadwork, headdresses, moccasins and the like. He was always ready with a good joke or eager for a new one and for many years was more than ready to play cards with the family.
He is preceded in death by his infant son: Danny Wilhelm; his parents: John and Hattie; his brothers: Arthur, Max, Arnold, Robert “Bob”, Clarence “Nick”, Johnnie, and Gilbert “Gib”; his sisters: Irma, Emma, and Verna. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 62+ years, Betty; two sons: David and wife Tina of Martinsburg, MO, Dennis and wife Heather of rural Casey. His six grandchildren: Kayla, Megan and husband, Braden, Laura and husband, Kyle, Garet, Sara, and Charlie, also many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends. His laughter and presence will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
