Lynette was born on March 11, 1948 to Harry and Carolyn Simms in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; joining her older brother, Harry Shannon Simms, into the family. Lynette grew up with her family in Lyndell, Pennsylvania. She began volunteering at a young age at a local school, known today as Kimberton Waldorf School, in Lyndell, PA. Lynette and her brother graduated high school from Friends Select School in Philadelphia. Upon her high school graduation, Lynette began her social work career at Pathways School in Norrisburg, PA. She later attended Iowa State University, where she graduated with a degree in Animal Science in 1982 before continuing her calling in social work. Lynette worked in hog confinements farrowing pigs before beginning a 26-year career at Orchard Place in Des Moines, IA until her retirement.
Lynette met her husband, Gerald Christensen, while waiting on a ferry at Prince Edward Island, when Lynette asked Gerald for a bottle opener. They went on a camping trip soon after they met and stayed in touch before eventually marrying on October 14, 1972. The couple traveled the world together when Gerald’s job took him overseas. Lynette found great pleasure in the simplest things in life: such as nature and a cup of coffee watching the sunset. The couple was blessed with their daughter, Carrie Lyn, on December 21, 1984. The family made their home in Panora, Iowa. Following her retirement, Lynette and Gerry purchased a property in Nicaragua, where again the simplicity of the lifestyle brought great joy to Lynette. While in Nicaragua, the couple made their home in the rural area of Machapa, Nicaragua.
Lynette enjoyed wood carving, reading, and spending time outdoors. She spent many summers enjoying nature and fishing at the family’s cabin on Stalker Lake in Dalton, Minnesota. Lynette appreciated the simpler things in nature. Some would see a dandelion’s seeds as weeds, but Lynette would see wishes. She will be known for her caring heart and her sense of adventure that took her around the world.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carolyn and Harry Simms; and parents-in-law, Evelyn and Henry Christensen; cousin, Alex Bittle; cousin, William Biddle.
She leaves behind her husband, Gerald Christensen; daughter, Carrie Christensen; brother, Harry Simms. and wife, Suzanne Bratt-Simms; cousin, Elizabeth Quick and husband, Jim; cousin, Gardiner Biddle, and a host of extended family and friends that will miss her dearly.
Lynette encouraged her daughter and husband during hard times with these words:“ I’ll be brave, you’ll be brave and all will be well”.
Mom: My heart is a river, and it continues to flow to you.
