Obituary for Virgil Dean Miller
Virgil Dean Miller, 84, of Fontanelle, Iowa passed away July 29, 2015. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday, August 2, at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Services will held 10:00 A.M. Monday, August 3, at the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Stuart. Burial will be held at a later date in the Fontanelle Cemetery. Dean as he was known by family and friends, was born May 27, 1931 on the family farm south of Menlo to Francis E. and Lomie A. (Harkins) Miller. He attended Jefferson Township County School and graduated from Menlo Consolidated School with the class of 1949. Shortly after graduating, Dean enlisted into the United States Navy serving his county proud during the Korean Conflict. After Dean was honorably discharged in March of 1956 he returned home and started working for Kalbach Station in Menlo. Dean was united in marriage to Lolabelle A. Ludwig McCarthy on January 17, 1957 and together they lived in Menlo for 16 years. While living in Menlo, he worked for Wilson Trucking with longtime friend Tom Miller. They later bought the Wilson Trucking business and started Miller and Miller Trucking. They were well known in the area hauling both farm animals and grain for area farmers. In the 1970’s they moved south of Menlo and he joined his dad and brother Keith in farming they later moved to another farm north of Fontanelle. In the early 1980’s Dean and Lolabelle made their home in Fontanelle. During this time he drove for Ron Dwinell and G&H over the road tag team with Lolabelle, but his real passion in life was his farming. He spent his retirement years helping Marlin Marckmann on his farm southwest of Greenfield. Dean was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Casey, the Lions Club, the Menlo Fire Department, Menlo American Legion Post 511,Fontanelle saddle club and served on the Menlo School Board. He enjoyed camping and traveling to visit friends and family in California, Texas, and other warm areas during the winter months, raising and taking care of animals, antique John Deere tractors, tractor rides, listening and dancing to country music, caring for his horses and ponies, riding in parades, but most of all he enjoyed quality time spent with his friends and family.
He is preceded in death by his parents Francis and Lomie Miller, his beloved wife Lolabelle on December 30, 1995, two sisters, Margorie Gomez and Doris Stauser and one brother, Keith Miller.
Dean leaves behind to cherish his memory, his children, Carla (Everett) Grasty of Stuart, Iowa, Wayne Miller of Fontanelle, Iowa and Stacie Christensen of Fontanelle, Iowa; grandchildren, Brant (Kat) Grasty of Guthrie Center, Iowa, Leah (Jeff Bates) Jabbie, of Gardner, Kansas, Katie Christensen of Fontanelle and Travis (Cari Israel) Christensen of Greenfield; great grandchildren, Kael Grasty, Haedyn Grasty, Rohnin Grasty, Aylana Belle Grasty, Layla Bates, and Alexandrea Bates and a host of nieces, nephews and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
