Obituary for Wayne Newell
Wayne L. Newell, 77 of Greenfield passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2020. Visitation will be held from 10 AM-12 Noon on Saturday, May 30th at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greenfield. Graveside memorial service with full military honors will follow at 1 PM at the Greenfield Cemetery. Following the graveside service there will be a time of fellowship and gathering at Wayne and Joan’s home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Wayne Newell Memorial Fund and sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, IA 50250. Wayne was born January 2, 1943 in Carroll, Iowa to Bernard Donald and NoDell Vera (Gard) Newell. He was raised in Anita and graduated from Anita High School with the class of 1961. Following high school, Wayne enlisted into the United States Navy on July 5, 1961 and during this time was stationed in San Diego, California before being honorably discharged on July 2, 1965. Wayne was united in marriage to Joan Hollander on June 6, 1970 in Greenfield where they made their home and together became the proud parents of two daughters, Nicole and Natalie. He worked construction, ran a Texaco Filling Station, worked for Pepsi, owned and operated Greenfield Home Improvement, and since 1996, owned and operated GHI Sanitation which he built from the ground up. Wayne also got into the roll off business in 2008. Wayne enjoyed Iowa Football, playing Fast Track, golfing, his dogs, camping, following his children and then grandchildren throughout the years with their sporting and school events, and spending quality time with his family and friends.
Preceding him in passing are his parents Bernard and NoDell Newell; sister Donna Wedemeyer; father-in-law Bernhardt (Slick) Hollander; mother-in-law Vergene (Bohnsack) Hollander; brother-in-laws Ron Hollander, Ron Powell and Bernie Hollander; and sister-in-law Robin Furne.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Joan Newell; daughters Nicole (Jason) Burg of Creston; and Natalie Newell of Fort Dodge; grandchildren Payton and Colby Burg of Creston; nieces Terri Cushman of Loveland, Colorado; Sheri Wedemeyer of Colorado Springs; and Vicki Wedemeyer of Colorado Springs; sister-in-laws Cheryl Hollander of Bellevue, Nebraska; Lynn (Len Mash) Powell of Ankeny, Iowa; Tracey Bettin of Odebolt, Iowa; and brother-in-law Craig Furne of Denison, Iowa. Also left behind are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends all of whom will miss him greatly.
