Obituary for Mary Leona Gilman
Mary Leona (Oberholtz) Gilman, 88 passed away September 30, 2016 at her rural Stuart home. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday, October 3, 2016 at the Johnson Family Funeral Home – Stuart Chapel. A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Dexter. Burial will follow the service in South Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart. Memorial contributions may be made to the M. Leona Gilman Memorial Fund and may be sent to Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250. Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

Leona was born on November 13, 1927 in Cromwell, Iowa to Alex and Edna M. (Just) Oberholtz. Leona graduated from Stuart High School and received a teaching certificate from Drake University. She first taught country school at Bear Creek then taught in Jamaica and Greenfield elementary schools. On February 22, 1950, Leona was united in marriage to Harold Warren Gilman at the Jefferson Center United Methodist Church. They resided on a farm south of Stuart raising their two children Mary and Warren. Leona was a 4-H leader and Sunday school teacher for many years. She enjoyed working with kids and attending sporting events of her children and grandchildren. Leona was active in Farm Bureau, serving several offices of the women’s group and her church. She loved to bake, sew, garden and raise livestock. Late in life she went to work at Hancock Fabrics in West Des Moines.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harold on August 5, 1999.

Leona leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, Mary (Michael) O’Malia of West Des Moines and Warren (Linda) Gilman of Dexter; grandchildren, Josh (Ali) Gilman of Earlham, Jessica (Nick) Comes of Earlham and Marcie O’Malia of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two great grandchildren, William and Emmalyn and a host of friends all of whom will miss her greatly.
