Obituary for Vera Mae O'Toole
Vera Mae O’Toole, 83 of Stuart passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at the Guthrie County Hospital in Guthrie Center. Celebration of Life Visitation will be held from 11 AM to 1 PM on Saturday, November 10th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial will take place at the South Oak Grove Cemetery in Stuart. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Stuart Food Bank and sent in care of the funeral home. Vera was born on November 17, 1934 to Raymond and Ada (DeVries) O’Toole in Norton, Kansas. As a young girl she lived in numerous places while her mother was a teacher. Ada later married Joe Eversull and the family settled in Stuart when Vera was 11. She attended Stuart High School and graduated with the class of 1952. Vera was very active in high school; she was in the debate club, band majorette, played basketball and wrote several articles in the high school newspaper. Following graduation she attended the University of Iowa where she was in the first Dental Hygienist graduating class. Vera was united in marriage to John Wormley in 1956. The couple followed John’s duty in the Army as a dentist living in Texas, Hawaii and Washington D.C. To this union three children were born: Nani, Kevin and Gregory. They lastly settled in Stuart in 1967. Vera was united in marriage to Marvin Whetstone in 1976. Vera and Marvin farmed outside of Stuart.

Vera loved crafts of all kinds. She was a master seamstress and designed her own wedding dress. She enjoyed doing needlepoint, crocheting, woodworking, beading, macrame, and tending to her plants. In her later years, she was involved in philanthropy especially to organizations involving children and wildlife.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and both husbands, John Wormley and Marvin Whetstone.

Vera is survived by her children: Nani Heywood of Stuart, Kevin Wormley (Susan) of Diamondhead Lake, Greg Wormley (Maria) of Glenwood; grandchildren: Joseph Hanner (Krista) of Des Moines, Arthur Hanner of Spokane, WA, Iain Heywood of Stuart, Liesl Heywood of Stuart, Sarah Hassan of Stuart; six great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Lou Eitzman (Don) of Gainsville, FL; and a host of extended family and friends that will miss her dearly.
