Donald was born August 9, 1927 to Lona and Bea (Crees) Slayton at the family home near Exira. He was one of six children. He grew up in Hamlin and attended schools near there. Donald valued his education and would hitchhike to Guthrie Center High School to attend. He was the first in his family to complete high school.

On November 25, 1948, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Caltrider. They moved to Waterloo for three years and then returned to Casey in the early 1950’s to farm. To this union three children were born: Carolyn, David and Robert.

He was a lifelong member of the Casey United Methodist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Donald enjoyed attending his children’s school events and always made time throughout the year to go. After retirement he loved going to Texas for the Winter’s. It is here where he loved playing pool winning several tournaments. Don played softball in the Adair town league until his 60’s. He attended tractor pulls every weekend and competed in them in the 1960’s. He always enjoyed watching his favorite NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty; parents, Lona and Bea Slayton; siblings, Glen and Helen.
