He was raised in the Harrison Township and graduated from Stuart High School with the class of 1948. Following High School, Ernie helped his father on the family farm. He enlisted into the United States Army in 1952 and proudly served his county during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged in 1954, Ernie was united in marriage to Vivian Bassett at the Menlo United Methodist Church. Together they became the proud parents of two children, Melinda and Steven. After their marriage, Ernie and Vivian moved to Kansas City, and during this time, Ernie attended Airline School and worked for Braniff Airlines. They later moved to Des Moines where Ernie worked for Iowa Power and Light and once again helped his father on the farm. In 1962, Ernie and Vivian made their home in Menlo and Ernie began his career in Banking. He worked for the Security State Bank for 24 years as Vice President before retiring. Ernie was a member of the Menlo United Methodist Church and served as a trustee for several years. Other memberships included, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Guthrie County Bankers Association, Guthrie County Youth Association, served on the Menlo city Council for several years, IOOF, Menlo Fire Department, and served on the Coon Valley Telephone Board.
